The Multi-crew Pilot License (MPL) established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) allows a pilot to have the same privileges of a co-pilot in commercial air transportation on multi-crew airplanes. Essentially, the specialized training incorporates flight deck integration and crew techniques from the very beginning.
The ab initio, competency based MPL curriculum integrates Crew Resource Management as well as Threat and Error Management skills throughout training. In addition, it provides for greater use of flight simulators that enables the incorporation of scenario based training.
CAE Oxford Aviation Academy's MPL program, which is always done in collaboration with a sponsoring airline, is divided into four training phases
- Core / Basic (I / II) Phases - Specific basic single pilot training and an introduction to multi-crew operations and instrument flight
- Intermediate (III) Phase - Brings in the application of multi-crew operations in a high performance multi-engine turbine airplane
- Advance Phase (IV) - Type rating training within an airline oriented environment
CAE's initial MPL beta program has been very successful in meeting benchmarks. After completing the first two phases of training CAE Oxford Aviation Academy's first 12 students are currently training in Dallas, USA, and Toronto, Canada for phases III and IV of the program.
CAE Oxford Aviation Academy also operates three further MPL programmes with European airlines easyJet and Flybe in addition to a programme delivered in Hong Kong with Dragonair. 12 cadets have already graduated and commenced line flying with Flybe plus a further 36 cadets are currently undergoing training.
CAE intends to initiate further MPL programs in various parts of the world. If you are interested in learning more about our MPL program, contact us at caeoxfordaviationacademy@cae.com.
